WEXFORD, Pa., April 19, 2017 — Kris Wright will be pulling double duty times two this weekend, April 21-23, at the beautiful Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Ala.
The young driver from Wexford, Pa., will be competing in his second race of the season in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship. Additionally, he will race in the second round of the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) Prototype Challenge. Both of these race series feature doubleheader weekends, totaling four races for the 22-year-old.
“This is a big weekend for me at Barber,” said Kris Wright. “Having four races on one weekend is not only a lot of fun but a great way to get all the seat time early in the season, which should prove beneficial. Although we’ve done some testing in both cars and already had the first races in each series, a full race weekend is tremendous for my growth as a driver.”
“I’ve been working with Kris for a couple of years now,” said driver coach Nic Jonsson. “We saw he had talent when he was competing in both the Pirelli World Challenge and the IMSA Continental Tire Series over the past couple of years and knew he was ready to delve further into racing. The opportunities arose for him to drive both the USF2000 single seater with John Cumminskey and the JDC Prototype, which are both great cars and exciting series. This weekend at Barber should be a fantastic opportunity to be fully immersed as a driver. After his podium at Sebring last month, we are excited to keep the momentum going.”
In the USF2000 series, Wright will compete in the No. 34 John Cummiskey Racing (JCR) entry sponsored by PPG Paints, American Financial, and MasterTech for Round 2 on the 2.38 mi (3.83 km), 15-turn Alabama road racing circuit. After qualifying early Friday morning, Kris will have his first 40-minute USF2000 race of the weekend from 1:40-2:20 p.m., and Race 2 is scheduled for Saturday from 5:45-6:25 p.m. All times Eastern.
In the IMSA Prototype Challenge series, Kris will drive the No. 7 JDC Motorsports’ Élan DP02 entry, sponsored by PPG. Qualifying is scheduled for Friday at 10:20 for 20 minutes. Race 1 will commence at 4:45 p.m. for 45 minutes on Friday. Race 2 runs from 1:00-1:45 p.m. on Saturday. Kris finished in second place in class recently at Sebring International Raceway in just his first IMSA Prototype Challenge race.
